As winter is approaching it is time to think about how well your house is insulated. The average house loses a massive amount of energy in the form of lost heat, just to give you an idea of how heat is lost I have given a quick breakdown below.

  • 35% through the walls of your house
  • 25% through the roof
  • 25 through doors and windows
  • 15% through the floor

There are a number of benefits from ensuring that your house is well insulated! Simply insulating the walls, floors loft and windows you can save a significant amount of money on your fuel bills in the long term not to mention the environmental impact of saving energy. The cost of completely insulating your house may seem expensive at the time but this will pay off in the long term.

Start Insulating your Home

The best way to start insulating your home is to look at the quick wins. These are the small changes that will make a big difference in the long term.

Water Tank Jackets

Insulating your hot water tank can be as easy as fitting a jacket around the cylinder to stop the tank losing heat, most hot water cylinders these days come with foam insulation fitted as standard.

Insulating the Roof

If you have access to your loft it can be easy enough to lay insulation between the roof joists, simply laying blanket insulation in the form of fibreglass roll insulation can help you to reduce the loss of heat through the roof by up to a quarter.

Window and Door Insulation

Insulating your windows and doors can be as easy as fitting draft excluders around the gaps in the window frames. Self adhesive draft excluder strips are inexpensive and can be easily fitted to windows and doors to help keep the draft out.

DIY Focus Tip – fit insulating strips to the door and window frames ensuring that they don't get pulled off when the door or window closes

Big Insulation Project

There are a number of larger insulation projects that can help you to save money on your heating bills. Insulating walls can involve a lot of work, in most modern properties insulation will have been fitted when the house was built. Older properties are less likely to have insulation it is worth getting a professional in to help with a larger project.

Double or Triple Glazing can help to reduce heat lost through windows and can also act as a good insulation against noise if you live on a main road. Double glazing is another case where you should bring in the professionals to help you.

Thank you for the tips, I am

Thank you for the tips, I am having trouble with my heating system and insulating my home is the best long term option. I think the windows are the main problem in my case as they are very difficult to handle (closing/opening -specially in winter season). I made my plans for this season and I learned that a double glazing cost would be so hard handle.
