Lawnmower Guide
Choosing a Lawnmower
Summer is fast approaching and soon all the hay fever sufferers among us will be sneezing and wiping our eyes as everyone starts cutting the grass. So I thought it would be the perfect time to add a Lawnmower Guide to DIY Focus, hay fever Sufferers Beware!! The Lawnmowers will be out soon enough.
First thing is first how many types of Lawnmower can you get? There are four main types of lawnmower and these in no specific lawnmower preference are.
Electric Lawnmowers, Petrol Lawnmowers, Cylinder Lawnmowers and last but not least Rotary Lawnmowers
Electric Lawnmowers
I would recommend getting an electric lawnmower if you have a small garden to maintain as a small electric lawnmower will serve your purposes well and if you have limited space in your garden shed an electric lawnmower will not take up too much storage space.
Doing the edges, often the best option for doing the edges is to use a strimmer which is a type of electric lawnmower basically a hand held device that has a fast moving rotating blade on the bottom that allows you to cut grass at edges and hard to reach places.
DIY Focus Tip - Always make sure that you use an (RCD) residual current device to avoid any nasty shocks if you cut through the lawnmower cable.
Rotary Lawnmowers
These lawnmowers cut grass by using a set of blades that rotate around a central point, the blades are set at a particular distance above the ground to ensure that the grass gets cut to a particular length. Some rotary lawn mowers can be adjusted for a closer cut. Rotary mowers include hover mowers that cut grass while floating on a cushion of air similar to the principle of a hovercraft.
Cylinder Lawnmowers
The Crème de la crème of lawnmowers the cylinder lawnmower is the mower favoured by many a green keeper to keep the golf greens mowed and in shape a rotary lawnmower is ideal for keeping your lawn in great shape. Cylinder lawnmowers work by having a cylinder of blades that rotate as the mower moves along. These come in all shapes and sizes from small push along mowers to big ride on lawn mowing monsters that destroy and grass in the path, leaving a great result. Sit on Mowers are Ideal for large lawns or golf courses.
The big question is Petrol or Electric?
Electric mowers are ideal for small gardens but remember to get an extension cable with the all important RCD to avoid any accidents.
Petrol lawnmowers are great if your garden is on a larger scale and they are very reliable, many petrol lawnmowers have wheels that drive the mower so if you have a garden that is on a slope you can easily get up the hill without too much effort.
If you have a really big garden a sit on petrol mower is a great option these grass munching monsters will make easy work of the biggest gardens.
